Improved public information on access to surgery

The provincial government and the Saskatchewan Surgical Care Network (SSCN) launched two initiatives today as part of the government’s strategy to ensure access to surgical care for all Saskatchewan people. There is a Web site [www.sasksurgery.ca] where patients can obtain information on how long they may have to wait for their particular procedure and patients can contact surgical care co-ordinators for information about their surgery.

“Can the easy distribution of data promised by the Internet actually bring the type of scrutiny that ultimately leads to less information being available?” This article in the New York Times highlights a new U.S. law called the Data Quality Act which requires the government to set standards for the accuracy of scientific information used by federal agencies. Some feel these initiatives indicate a substantial shift to a more conservative culture of information.
